     Happy Post St. Patrick’s Day

This year was a unique celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. There was a dinner at St. Joseph’s a
week earlier, a dinner at St. Mary’s on the Saturday before ( featuring the dulcet tones of our
own Bud Joyce). The day itself started at St. Mary’s with Mass followed by a Stroll to City Hall
(escorted by our own Officer Tim Keating on his patrol bike) to raise the tricolor (and enjoy the
tenor tones of New London’s Mayor Kevin Cavanagh), followed by a traditional Irish breakfast
at Hanafin’s Pub. The rest of the day belonged to all the local and state wide participants who
marched in New London’s Irish parade. Diarmuid and his committee put on a gala celebration,
short on distance, but long on friendship and good cheer. Brothers Pat Kennedy(senior and
junior) and Ed McDermott drove one of the currachs up State Street. Deirdre Cavanagh was the
winner of the soda bread contest, judged by former Mayor Peg Curtin ( no collusion here!).
Brother Dan Kelley’s wife and my son Brian Moore were runners up in the contest, and I
delivered the half loaves to the soup kitchen for breakfast the next morning.

There were two hearty contingents participating in the Mystic Parade at the end of the month.
Our own unit had our own Past President Joe Coleman riding in a convertible behind our loyal
contingent, and the New London Irish parade committee had a group reminding Mystic that they
set a good example for parades!

Upcoming Events

The New London Library has launched a fine program in April concerning Irish culture and
events. I sent out several emails about the program, and enjoyed a session of Irish Storytellers,
and a viewing of the Liam Neeson film about Michael Collins. Unfortunately these events were
poorly attended; I hope that more of you will take advantage of the upcoming events:
